my freundin Laura came back from the conference in Slovenia. Being such a geek I had to do some googling on her encounter in those caves - Proteus:

..the only cave amphibian and is the largest of true cave animals, that is those which can not survive ouside the caves.
..lives in complete dark, entire body is more or less sensitive to light
..3 methods of breathing: gils, partial lungs and skin
..able to survive without food for up to 12years.
